Who’d have thought Christmas would come this early? Grab a glass of bubbles, put on the festive music and light the fire. It’s time to unveil the IIAR Analyst Of The Year award winners.
2018 was a year in which influencer relations became more important in delivering business impact, and so unsurprisingly analysts’ voices have been a critical focus for sales enablement and marketing. We see analysts themselves continuing to build profile beyond repors, through social media and content, and in response organisations are ramping their commitment to tracking how analysts impact their brand. It’s an exciting, evolving time.
So for the IIAR community, it’s important to recognise the range of analysts and firms who are leading the way. We listen carefully to the voices of our members and remain fully engaged with the global analyst network.
To this end we’ve heard from the community in eleven countries across four continents. We’ve reviewed hundreds of nominations and thousands of point scores. Award winners were determined based on the scoring provided by IIAR members, in accordance with the IIAR SOSM methodology. The nominations therefore reflect the best practice promoted within the IIAR.
All of this leads to one thing – as a festive drumroll is unleashed – the award winners… Continue Reading →
In the midst of the nation being gripped by World Cup fever, the IIAR Summer Party happened to fall on a historic semi-final appearance by England. But that iconic World Cup Trophy was, of course, very far from being the most important accolade contested tonight.
That’s right – tonight was also the announcement of the IIAR’s much-coveted Analyst Relations Professional of the Year 2018.
The IIAR’s recognition of the capabilities of the analyst relations community is an important moment in our industry – not just because we can celebrate the great work of our friends and peers – but also because it’s an opportunity to gain feedback from analyst themselves. And indeed responses from analysts at over 60 firms are at the core of this methodology and the ensuring awards. They rated over 400 professionals, 85 agencies, 9 megavendors, and gave the IIAR a comprehensive set of insights on best practices.
Thanks to the analysts
We asked the analysts to be thorough in their critique. And as AR pros, having committed hours to the completion of numerous research responses, who wouldn’t want the chance to pose some questions back in the other direction?! Fortunately the analyst community were very generous with their time and the depth of feedback. Our profuse thanks to everyone who participated and took time from the barrage of vendor briefings and research obligations to commit to the process. The feedback we sought related directly to the IIAR’s model of the 3Rs of Analyst Relations. Put simply, these are the defining three key traits required for the job. While we’re sure everyone reading this is entirely fluent in the 3Rs, they can be summarised as follows:
- Responsiveness – analysts expect AR pros to revert back to them in a timely fashion with the information required for their research
- Relationships – analysts have many stakeholders; they rely on someone that’s easy to deal with always goes that extra mile
- Results – can AR pros deliver results for their employers?
Full time scores
And so the moment of truth. The referee’s final whistle has gone, there’s no time for video replays and the crowd is on the pitch. Here’s the final score… Continue Reading →

The Institute of Industry Analyst Relations (IIAR), the not-for-profit professional association established to raise awareness of analyst relations and the value of industry analysts, has announced the winners of the IIAR Analyst Professional of the Year 2017 and the IIAR AR Team of the Year 2017
Signe Loenberg / Loenberg AR is the IIAR AR Professional of the Year 2017 for the second year running; Cisco moves to the top as IIAR AR Team of the Year 2017
London, Wednesday 12th July 2017 – 20:00 BST. A survey of industry analysts conducted by the Institute of Industry Analyst Relations (IIAR, www.analystrelations.org) looked at the analysts’ perception of how analyst relations (AR) professionals are performing as a whole and compared it with results from the past, according to the ‘IIAR Three Rs’ of AR:
“Whilst responsiveness was the single most important determinant of AR performance last year, a new improved methodology provides unique insights into the evolution in industry analysts’ perception of AR performance,” said Neil Pollock, IIAR Board Member and Professor at Edinburgh University (@neilpollock, LinkedIn).
Compared to 2016, the 2017 results showed that of the IIAR 3 R’s of AR, the analysts surveyed most value the ‘result’ over aspects like relationship and responsiveness. Results are whether the AR professional is able to deliver on the information the analyst is looking for; whilst responsiveness measures the timeliness and reliability of AR professionals to respond to analyst requests/needs; and the relationship is how well the AR professional cultivates and enhances the interaction with analysts, including aspects like trust and honesty. Our interpretation of the data is that whilst the analysts still value turnaround and good communication AR professionals will increasingly also need to understand the specifics of the individual analyst firm, how the analysts works and what they want.
The IIAR AR Professional of the Year 2017 survey run by the Institute of Industry Analyst Relations is going to be announced tomorrow, Wednesday 12th July 2017 at 2000 BST during the 2017 IIAR Summer Party, sponsored by TCS!
Who will succeed as top AR professional current title-holder Signe Lonberg?
Which AR team will take the title from the current holders IBM?
Is the ‘responsiveness’ of AR professionals to industry analysts requests and needs still the single most important determinant of AR performance? As well as announcing the best AR team and the best AR Professional of the Year, this year’s survey will also provide unique insights into the evolution in analysts’ perception of AR performance.
Analysts have now voted… No drum roll yet – as we’re not ready to announce the winner just now, but we will tomorrow evening during the IIAR Summer Party at the Shangri La at the Shard – promise!
Make sure you register if you’d like to attend as the event is strictly by invitation only!
The IIAR is delighted to announce the winners of this year’s

Analyst relations pros voted for over 170 different individual analysts. Having run the survey over several years, it was striking to see the amount of new analysts that figured this year as compared to previous ones. This goes to show the dynamic nature of this space. There are now hundreds of so-called ‘upstarts’ firms, analysts continue to move between firms, and new analysts enter into the picture. Continue Reading →

Working for a large IT or Telco vendor brings many perks but it’s not all plain-sailing. Having worked for the likes of HP and IBM, we know a thing or two about life in the megavendor fast lane: long hours, multiple internal stakeholders to please, ever-increasing targets to meet, ever-decreasing resources at your disposal, and of course even larger numbers of analysts with more varied coverages to service.
We also know that AR programs can vary widely from one large vendor to another, which is why we wanted to provide a ranking of these firms. We initially wanted to have a ranking of the ‘top 10’ megavendors, but we soon discovered that there are not that many companies which fit the criteria. In order to keep things serious, we established a cut-off point of revenues over US$20 billion, and in order to bring as wide a bearing as possible to the term ‘megavendor’, we decided to stipulate that those vendors should sell a mix of at least three of the following: IT hardware, networking equipment, telecommunication services, enterprise software, IT services and outsourcing, Business consulting. The Institute of Industry Analyst Relations (IIAR) is pleased to recognize the first two recipients – Ellie Warner and Ed Gyurko – as IIAR Certified Experts.
This marks the official launch of two new IIAR certification levels consisting of IIAR Certified Expert (CE) and IIAR Certified Fellow (CF). These qualifications are designed for Analyst Relations (AR) professionals with four or eight years plus experience respectively focused in the AR industry.
Ed Gyurko – IIAR Certified Expert, Former Board Member and Influencer Engagement Manager, Logica (LinkedIn, @edgyurko) one of the first qualifying experts said, “The new IIAR certifications will not only help provide AR professionals with a way of differentiating themselves in the marketplace, but will also help enhance the AR profession overall.”
Ellie Warner – IIAR Certified Expert, Director, Corporate Communications APJ, EMC (LinkedIn, @elliewarner) commented, “The new IIAR certifications are good for AR professionals both as individuals and as a community. We are pleased to announce that work has been completed on the IIAR Certified Professional Exam and version 2.0 is now available online.
All current Board members and Secretary have completed the test successfully and are proud members of the IIAR Certified Professional LinkedIn club. We thought it was important to practice what we preached and so having sat the original test, the Board got together to look at questions which needed clarifying, updating or taking out altogether. Criticisms of the old test had included complicated wording, confusion over double negatives and some of the multiple choice options. We’ve gone through each question with a fine tooth-comb and are now happy that the test offers straight forward questions, with questions relating to today’s challenges and demands of the AR professional.
There are a few less questions, now 117 in total rather than 120 but the time limit of 90 minutes remains the same, which should give candidates plenty of time to double-check answers where necessary. It is an open-book exam and can be taken at any time but it must be taken in one sitting.
The IIAR is delighted to announce the election results of its new Board Members effective as of 1 December 2011 for 12 months.
The new Board is as follows: Continue Reading →

London, 25 August 2009: The Institute of Industry Analyst Relations (IIAR) today named Ray Wang, most recently Vice President, Principal Analyst with Forrester Research Inc., as its Analyst of the Year for the second year running. Ray was nominated by a global survey of 137 analyst relations professionals. Runners up for the title were Jon Collins of Freeform Dynamics and David Mitchell of Ovum. Jon Collins of Freeform Dynamics was voted the EMEA Analyst of the Year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given an industry-wide retrenchment in IT research spending, the traditional global analyst firms performed very strongly this year. Gartner, Forrester Research and IDC were ranked first, second and third respectively in the Analyst Firm of the Year category. The three firms were also highly rated in terms of their importance, achieving top three places in five of the nine industry segments. Nevertheless, boutique firms and specialists, particularly those based in Europe, also managed to hold their own in a tough economic environment. Freeform Dynamics, RedMonk and Quocirca all appeared in the top five Analyst Firm of the Year in EMEA, and their analysts scored highly in terms of importance in SMB, developer/IT Pro and Software, and green IT/sustainability, respectively. What do AR professionals most value when working with analysts? In addition to knowledge and market insight, flexibility in approach, responsiveness and willingness to listen all scored highly. “At a time when vendors are having to evaluate carefully where they should invest their limited funds, it is refreshing to see best-of-class analysts receiving recognition for the value they deliver.” said Jonny Bentwood, Board Member for the IIAR. “Now, more than ever before, analysts have to prove their tangible worth and those that provide independence, integrity, flexibility and deep industry knowledge of their specific areas are being recognised as true partners for vendors and IT buyers.”
Commenting on his award, Ray Wang said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised by the IIAR, especially in a year where clients challenge analysts to provide more actionable and personalised advice. As we rely more on social media tools to improve client delivery and outreach, I’m often reminded not to forget the other part of the equation – building strong relationships. In fact, the best AR pro’s I work with master the art of fostering strong relationships and understand that art often trumps science when dealing with people.”
