The first NYC IIAR Summer Party was a smashing success.  Some stats:

  • 7 Members from Accenture, HGS, Radware, Spotlight AR and Wipro
  • 9 Prospects
  • 3 Analysts
  • 3 Agency Executives
  • 8 Enterprise Firms represented

Some highlights:

  • Connections forged. Questions discussed. Networking in action. Possible new chapters forming.

Why the IIAR NYC Summer Party – I wanted an event stateside. I haven’t been able to fly over for the IIAR London parties.  Change starts with me.

Why join the IIAR?  For me, it is a chance to discuss AR best practices and challenges in a more formal way than simply networking or responding to questions on Linked In.  I get to hone my networking, party throwing, and collaboration technology skills. I get out of my comfort zone to think about new ways of executing AR strategically.

What’s next for the NYC IIAR Chapter – some ideas – a monthly gathering, a holiday event, a more formal exchange of ideas with programming, office tours.  Chapter members please weigh in on your desires.  Non chapter members, please join in the conversation and join the IIAR @ www.analystrelations.org

A few weeks ago, right before most of us went on our summer holidays we hosted the annual IIAR Summer Networking event at the EY offices in London, a party kindly sponsored by HCL Technologies and EY. As we begin to settle back into daily work routines, we wanted to take a moment to ponder the event, the conversations had, the old relationships that were nurtured and the new ones formed.

During the evening, we welcomed almost 40 industry analysts from firms including Gartner, IDC, Ovum, 451 Research, CCS Insight, Heavy Reading, Navigant Research, Freeform Dynamics, Bloor Research and IHS Markit. We were pleased to see so many AR professionals from companies including EY, Cisco, Criteo, GSMA and Vertiv, as well from agencies including Destrier, BITE, CCgroup and Chameleon. With the World Cup England-Croatia game on and stunning views to admire for the non-football fans in the room, there’s no wonder that the conversations were more effervescent that the prosecco enjoyed by attendees. It was a delightful evening which sparked conversations around AR best practice, analyst priorities, as well as informal topics, testament to the great relationships in the community.

During the evening, the IIAR recognised the AR professionals who go above and beyond in their career and have gained the respect and appreciation of analysts globally. Congratulations again to all winners and runners-up and we hope to continue to work closely with you to promote AR best practice.

While the World Cup may have finished, the IIAR’s AR Professional of the year results are still generating buzz and we will be running a webinar for IIAR members for a deep-dive on methodology, key takeaways and analyst feedback, as well as their significance for the AR profession. On Wednesday, 29th August at 1600 BST we will be hosting a webinar discussing the responses from analysts at over 60 firms who rated over 400 professionals, 85 agencies, 9 megavendors, and gave the IIAR a comprehensive set of insights on best practices.

To register please contact the IIAR community manager Fionnula Fitzsimons using the form below.

During the webinar we will have a quick refresher on The Three Rs of Analyst Relations, which form the basis for the IIAR survey that is sent out to analysts to vote on the AR Professional of the Year:

  • Responsiveness– analysts expect AR pros to revert back to them in a timely fashion with the information required for their research
  • Relationships– analysts have many stakeholders; they rely on someone that’s easy to deal with and always goes that extra mile
  • Results– can AR pros deliver results for their employers?

We will then discuss the survey methodology, drill into main analyst feedback and insight which are valuable resources that can help AR professionals to rethink their approach and create programmes that resonate with the analyst community.

As in previous years, we will highlight and discuss the main AR annoyances for analysts as well as best practice that sets AR pros apart in the eyes of analysts. This webinar will host and spark insightful dialogues on AR best practice and the future of the AR industry, and we hope that you can join us!

The webinar is free to attend for IIAR members and will take place on Wednesday, 29th August at 1600 BST. To register please contact the IIAR community manager Fionnula Fitzsimons at using the form below.

Hosted by IIAR Germany chapter leads Yvonne Kaupp (@YveKauppLinkedIn) and Simon Jones (@simondestrierLinkedIn), the networking event was focused on the topic of “how to run an effective inquiry”, with IIAR members and guests (our “prospective members”) sharing best practice and experiences. One point which came through loud and clear is that everyone is nervous about running their first analyst inquiry calls – usually related to having enough questions to ask in a 30-minute call.

Expert opinion from the other side of the table was on hand, with Munich-based Gartner analyst Fabio Di Capua (@fabiodik, LinkedIn) joining the networking evening. The simple answer is: Don’t worry – you don’t necessarily need to use the whole 30 minutes – and if you run out of time, you can always book another one. One key tip for AR professionals: Always be generous in providing stars for your analyst inquiries, because your analyst contacts will appreciate it!

The get-together kicked off a busy year ahead for the IIAR in Germany – watch this space for details of a networking event in Berlin, and save the date for the IIAR Germany beer garden get-together in Munich on June 7, from 1700 CET.

New sign-ups for the growing IIAR Germany membership are welcome – or contact us for details using the form below. You can even join the IIAR via credit card.

German IIAR Summer Stammtisch 2017: scope of AR, ISG/Experton and Paulaner https://analystrelations.org/2017/07/31/german-iiar-summer-stammtisch-2017-scope-of-ar-isgexperton-and-paulaner/ https://analystrelations.org/2017/07/31/german-iiar-summer-stammtisch-2017-scope-of-ar-isgexperton-and-paulaner/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 07:48:34 +0000 https://analystrelations.org/?p=180471 One of the most picturesque beer gardens in Munich was the setting for this year’s IIAR German Chapter Summer Event, gathering AR professionals and industry analysts. Our topic of the night was what it takes to make an analyst relations (AR) program mature and strong.

As we discussed, what success looks like actually depends on your business objectives and expectations of the individual companies and stakeholders. We all recognised that “AR” has a very wide scope, since it also covers many complementary disciplines and – depending on your job – may include Market Intelligence, Go-to-Market, PR, Sales Enablement, Strategy, or all of these. Reporting lines also influence the weighting of AR components.

Holding an event at a beer garden during the “long, hot summer” in Munich means offering a prayer to the weather gods, since hours of sunshine can be followed by sudden storms and rain. Our prayers were heard, and after several days of non-stop rain, the skies cleared in time for our first beers. After a long day in the office, it was enjoyable to get together with like-minded friends to enjoy the first beer of the evening. As ever for the IIAR in Germany, the ensuing discussions followed beer garden rules: informal, open and of course enjoyable.

From left to right: Thomas Zink, IDC; Ralph Phillips, Atos; Anja Steinmann, HPE; Danielle Hernandez, IDC; Sören Haubold, Giesecke & Devrient; Yvonne Kaupp, Retarus; Simon Jones, Destrier Communications

And so our topic of AR maturity was just one among many discussion items on the table. We discussed ISG (which includes the research firm formerly known as Experton) and how its questionnaires to collect information for vendor benchmarks are considered by many to be more and more demanding. We talked about the collaboration models within analyst firms, and within different regions. We debated the challenges of the need to constantly innovate or re-invent a business to create new revenue streams – and we spent some time talking about how it’s hard to explain to a friend or relative what AR – or being an analyst – is all about (see also the great article from Ludovic Leforestier about what analysts are and what they do). We talked about blockchain and new purchasing models. We spoke about research and citation policies of well-known analyst firms. And of course we spent a considerable amount of time discussing the quality of beer produced by Munich brewer Paulaner following its relocation to a new site.

It was a fun networking event with great people and I look forward to see you all again. Next time, we plan to pick up again the discussion around the level of AR maturity, in a private room at a local restaurant. I’m sure we’ll also spend more time discussing our favorite local beers, too.

AR colleagues: If you have not yet done so, don’t forget to sign up for an IIAR membership. See also more information about the value of the Membership here.

To the analyst community, please share the news on the IIAR German Chapter meetings with your colleagues. Our IIAR German Chapter Leads Simon Jones (LinkedIn, @simondestrier) at communications strategy consultancy Destrier and Yvonne Kaupp (LinkedIn@yvekaupp), IIAR Board Member and Head of Analyst Relations and Market Strategy at Retarus, look forwards to seeing you next time.

Prost!

Views and insights, what a party!

The 2017 IIAR London Summer party sponsored by TCS gathered over hundred analysts and AR pros in the Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard.

Following on the IIAR tradition of summer events at landmark venues such as Lords Cricket Grounds and the HMS Belfast, the UK Analyst and Analyst Relations communities gathered at the Shard in London on the 12th July for the annual IIAR Summer party 2017 sponsored by TCS.

Again attending were Analyst Relations professionals from major technology firms such as EY, HCL, Vodafone and Atos plus around 15 analyst firms including Gartner, IDC, PAC, Globaldata, IHS, Ovum, TechMarketView and HFS.

While the wine and beer was flowing there were many conversations on how the analyst and technology landscape is changing with topics such as digital transformation, robotics and cloud transformation.

The main highlight of the evening was the announcement of the AR professionals and AR teams of the year 2017, respectively Signe Loenberg and Cisco received their “trophies” from IIAR Board Member Neil Pollock (@neilpollockLinkedIn). Being Scottish, he turned the customary plaque into whisky.

The event was again kindly sponsored by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The evening provided a fantastic networking opportunity in a fun setting with a fantastic view of London. The impressive turnout and attendance of wide variety of analysts and AR professionals created an ideal environment for networking and to catch up with existing analyst connections as well as establish new relationships with the ever-growing EMEA analyst community.

The event was hosted by the IIAR UK Chapter co-leads Aniruddho Mukherjee (@aniruddho, LinkedIn) and David Rossiter (LinkedIn@davidrossiter).

IIAR Christmas Party kicks of the festive season with a bang…. https://analystrelations.org/2015/12/04/iiar-christmas-party-kicks-of-the-festive-season-with-a-bang/ https://analystrelations.org/2015/12/04/iiar-christmas-party-kicks-of-the-festive-season-with-a-bang/#respond Fri, 04 Dec 2015 10:37:10 +0000 https://analystrelations.org/?p=100860 The Christmas season took off with a bang last night with the IIAR Christmas Party taken place in the heart of DIGITAL UK in the Shoreditch Hotel. Attending were around 100 people from the Analyst community including around 70 industry analysts and 30 AR Pros. The analyst community was represented by analysts from Gartner, Forrester, PAC, IDC, IHS, Constellation and many others.

The event was kindly sponsored by Dell. From their perspective, the evening provided a fantastic networking opportunity in a fun and festive setting. The impressive turnout and the wide variety of analysts and AR professionals in attendance, created the ideal environment to catch up with existing analyst connections as well as establish new relationships with the ever-growing EMEA analyst community. 2015 has certainly been a busy year for all and the IIAR Christmas drinks were a great way to celebrate the successes of the year as we look towards an exciting 2016.

The other highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Analyst Firm and Analyst of the year. See Analyst of the Year 2015

A massive thanks to Jaqui and Carol for helping organize the event

Wishing Everyone a Fantastic Christmas Holiday and a Prosperous New Year !!

Last week, the second German IIAR Stammtisch gathered AR professionals and analysts for a private dining event in central Munich, this led into an interesting and enjoyable discussion about AR measurement. The overarching question was how to best communicate internally the value analysts can bring to the business, and the value of well managed communications between vendors and analysts.

“Why should I speak to this analyst” is a question AR pros are often confronted with. The pressure on AR pros has risen during the past years in terms of showing the return of investments gained through analyst relations and showing the value analysts can bring. In recent years expectations have both grown and  changed. Analysts are well aware of the new challenges, and eager to learn how to address.

In past years reports, whitepapers and analyst advice were naturally part of the relationship, today budgets are tighter in many companies, and investments in analyst insights have shrunk. Or teams became smaller, and bandwidth more limited to support research projects. Even more important becomes the task to explain to the internal stakeholders the treasures analysts can open up for them, and the value they can bring to the business.

AR professionals can face very different challenges. For example, an AR manager working for a new company in a niche market and a strong growth rate may face different challenges to an AR manager working for a large and established player in a saturated market. At the IIAR Stammtisch we exchanged about the specific pain points each of these AR managers might experience and the differing ways forward.

AR professionals and analysts have a common interest – proof the value of their work. Whilst we can’t do without AR measurement this has to be a value discussion rather than a simply a counting exercise, like counting the number of reports, the number of tweets, of interactions and so forth. AR pros and analysts need to join forces and seek ways to provide value to both sides and proof of the value delivered. The German Stammtisch, as part of the IIAR, will explore quantitative value measurement of Company+AR+Analyst interactions for a future IIAR Best Practice Paper.

Look out for more updates on this topic. We welcome your thoughts and experiences, leave a comment below – how do you show value delivered ?

Our inaugural meeting last summer, was a great success, bringing AR professionals from across Germany together to discuss common ground, over after-work drinks in a popular Munich bar.

We have now fixed the next get-together for members of the AR community based in Germany, as well as AR professionals who are responsible for AR in Germany. The next IIAR German chapter networking event will be held on Thursday, January 22, once again in Munich – Location details will follow.

This time around, we will talk about AR measurement and how to put a price tag on the value of AR. To help the discussion, we’re inviting locally-based analysts to come along and join us, for an evening of networking and quality conversation.

Join us at the Stammtisch and be part of the biggest gathering of AR professionals in Germany – please RSVP to Yvonne Kaupp (@YveKauppLinkedIn) as soon as possible <<HERE>>. Note, you do not have to be a member of the IIAR to attend this event, so please invite any AR colleagues or friends as well.

Don’t forget the IIAR Discussion – Negotiating with Gartner, also on the same day at 17:00 CET – Register <<HERE>>. This will finish in plenty of time to join the Stammtisch.
