Whilst Tier 1 analyst firms generally retain their position in the area of direct buying recommendations, the picture is different when it comes to other sources influencing the buyer journey.
For instance, boutique firms are claiming their share of the influencer space, particularly in regional markets.
They might however not have the same business models or abide by the same rules of engagement than traditional analyst research firms (see the IIAR Best Practice Paper: The 7+7+7 Golden Rules of Engagement).

Scaling analyst relations however poses multiple challenges, starting with prioritisation, bandwidth and content.
We are hosting an IIAR> Best Practice call on the 18 April 2019 at 1600-1700 BST / 1100-1200 EDT / 0800-0900 PDT to discuss and explore the subject of Scaling AR.
Join the IIAR for a one-hour Discussion Group, where we’ll ask and debate these topics, and more.
The discussion will be co-hosted by Katie Webb (LinkedIn@katiewebb) of Oracle and Ludovic Leforestier (@lludovicLinkedIn) at Criteo.

It’s free for all IIAR members. Register online here for the IIAR> Discussion Group > https://zoom.us/meeting/register/e5e0c0766eaca779d746f627e8486654

Have you recently thought about:

  • Whether AR is evolving into “Influencer Relations”?
  • How AR is changing to meet the evolving IT industry analyst firm landscape?
  • How AR can adapt to — and adopt — new ways of measuring AR productivity and effectiveness?
  • What the “next chapter” in the AR field will be?

It’s a very current and relevant topic that affects all of us, and should provide some food for thought as you move along in your own AR career. We are interested in getting your perspective, observations, comments and predictions about the current and future state of Analyst Relations.

Our members have indicated a few interesting plays by the industry analysis market leader, almost two years after its takeover of CEB. including a continued drive to multi-year contracts and aggressive drive to sell their $150k executives offerings, effectively mirroring the EXP strategy for vendors. Those offerings causing much confusion with users in vendor organisations are Gartner for General Managers, Gartner for Sales Leaders, Gartner for Marketing Leaders, etc.

Following our latest discussion group on the subject, the IIAR is conducting a discussion group for members to exchange the issues they face when being sold bundled products. This will enable members to discuss ways to get the best value without disclosing individual price. IIAR will then present these findings to Gartner for their feedback and help Gartner sales teams improve client satisfaction.

Are you getting the best value from your contract? https://analystrelations.org/2018/03/23/iiar-negotiating-with-idc/ https://analystrelations.org/2018/03/23/iiar-negotiating-with-idc/#comments Fri, 23 Mar 2018 21:32:31 +0000 https://analystrelations.org/?p=227773 Feeling the pinch in your negotiation with IDC on your subscription contract? Do you feel comfortable in buying the various Customer Segment (CS) options being pushed your way? Are you confident that you are getting value from your contracts? You’re not alone – many of your peers and IIAR members have commented (see the IIAR Tragic Quadrant 2017)

IIAR negotiating with IDC with Aniruddho Mukherjee and Ludovic Leforestier

IDC may be amongst the top IIAR Analyst Firm of the Year 2017 but are you getting the best value from your relationship? As per the IIAR Analyst Firm of the Year 2017 survey, AR professionals mentioned that they felt a push by IDC for running joint events, buying new CS which themselves are granular subset of the larger IDC CS access. As the analysts manage the P&L, they too seem to want to push buying multiple granular CS.

In 2017, China Oceanwide Holdings Group, a Chinese privately owned investment company, acquired IDC. While IDC continues to offer global, regional, and local expertise on technology and industry opportunities and trends in over 110 countries. As per the IIAR Analyst Firm of the Year 2017 survey, AR professionals mentioned costs seem to be increasing at 10-20% yoy. They also felt that IDC was not investing enough on improving the IDC website or better visualisation of data.

Building on our previous conversations (see links below), the IIAR will host an in-depth discussion with IIAR members, looking at IDC’s commercial practices and explore potential solutions.

You’re not alone -many of your peers and IIAR members have commented (see the IIAR Tragic Quadrant) on Gartner’s hard stance and cowboy attitude during negotiations: it maybe the IIAR Analyst Firm of the Year 2017 but also the hardest to work with.

Gartner is commanding a dominant market share and increasingly behaving like a monopoly. Gone are the days of client focus, flexibility and year long engagement. Strategy days and report reprint rights costs have being increasing at 10-20% yoy. Out goes partnership and value selling, in comes multi-year lock-in contracts, no discounts policy and no value adds such as Symposium tickets or in person analyst meetings.

Building on our previous conversations (see links below), the IIAR will host an in-depth discussion with IIAR members, looking at Gartner’s commercial practices and explore potential solutions.

Getting the Message Out in a Post-Truth World

One key question for analyst relations in a post-truth world is, “How much does the quality and reputation of the medium you use to get your message out really matter?” Or is it just a case of “Never mind the quality, feel the width!”

We at NelsonHall believe that for marketing to be truly effective, it must combine influence with high-quality content. Accordingly, the session with NelsonHall on April 27th will demonstrate:

  • Why a sound bedrock of evidence is still important in a post-truth society
  • Examples of value achieved by NelsonHall clients, including how NelsonHall can impact your company’s share price.

At the same time, it’s important for analyst firms to “drink their own champagne” and offer a leading-edge digital approach to their own service delivery. Accordingly, the session will provide introductions to NelsonHall’s buy-side reach and truly digital research product including its:

  • Buyer Intelligence Group & partner channels
  • Highly respected & impactful blogs
  • Interactive quadrant capability (what quadrants should look like in the digital age).

We look forward to meeting you on April 27th: Rachael Stormonth (LinkedIn, @rstormonth), Guy Saunders (LinkedIn, @GuySaunders1), Paul Connolly (LinkedIn, @Paul_NH), John Willmott (LinkedIn, @John_NH)

AR Pros and the Industry Analysts work on the basis of undocumented principles – principles that sometimes get broken or abused and then what do you do? This webinar will look at the types of analysts AR Pros come across on a daily basis and how to engage with them. Questions such as whether there is a secret recipe on how to build trust? – When should you be transparent? – Should analysts be afforded preferential treatment? – And does NDA really mean, NDA? – will be addressed along with many other frustrations we all face in the world of AR. Oh yes, there is also a section on ‘Divas’!

This IIAR Best Practice Paper on the Rules of Engagement is available for download <<here>> for members and <<there>> for everyone.

This is the first meeting of the new “IIAR – EMEA Service Providers AR Virtual Chapter”. With an objective to hold meetings once every two months and bring together AR professionals from Service Provider companies across Europe with a varied agenda. The agenda for this meeting focuses on –

“AR’s role and finding a balance between outbound and inbound information sharing with analysts”

  • How much content does AR have to know and be able to share with analysts and customers?
  • What is a good balance between “facilitator/making the connections to the right people inside the company” and “being a company spokesperson”.
  • What is a good balance between “briefing” (getting the messages out) and “listening” (getting analysts insights in/consulting with analysts etc)

Maria Forss (@MariaForrs) – Director of Industry Analyst & Media Relations at Tieto in Finland, has kindly accepted to lead this EMEA AR Virtual Chapter. These chapter meetings are intended to be informal, with time for discussion and questions.  For future meetings it would be good to gain input from the AR representatives of participating services companies on their interests for future topics.

CeBIT is four weeks away! What can AR professionals do to make the most of the largest tech event in EMEA? What’s possible even at this short notice?

In Tuesday’s IIAR webinar, we will discusss on how you can attract attention from analysts — and explain what’s not possible. Long-time IIAR members Yvonne Kaupp (LinkedIn, @YveKaupp) from T-Systems, Simon Jones (LinkedIn, @MrNesjo) from OnPR and Duncan Chapple (LinkedIn, @DuncanChapple) from Kea will lead the discussion, linking the conference to the overall plan for your AR programme.

Kaupp and Jones will also spotlight the most effective tactics at CeBIT: relationship building, scheduling tips and how to provide something worth knowing.

This call is also the official launch of the IIAR German Chapter, lead by Yvonne Kaupp -with the support of Simon Jones and Sven Litke (LinkedIn, @SvenLitke) from Kea. More on this later!

The call will include plenty of time for questions and answers.

It will be at 1600 CET (8am EST or 1500 GMT) on Tuesday 18 February.

To attend this webinar, register by email to secretary [at) analystrelations (dot) org, adding in any questions you’d like answered on the call. The webinar is free to attend for IIAR Members (another good reason for joining the IIAR) or for non-members there is a fee of $25/£15 that is redeemable against IIAR Membership over the next 12 months. The IIAR look forward to joining you at the webinar: it will be a “not-to-miss” session for all.

IIAR Webinar with Gartner’s Nancy ‘Ombudsman’ Erskine https://analystrelations.org/2013/06/28/iiar-webinar-ombudsman-gartner/ https://analystrelations.org/2013/06/28/iiar-webinar-ombudsman-gartner/#respond Fri, 28 Jun 2013 22:57:16 +0000 https://analystrelations.org/?p=6190 It’s Friday night and your exec / stakeholder / boss (tick all that applies) walks into your cubicle / desk / office brandishing what clearly is a Gartner report in his hand. Alas, it’s clear it does not mean kudos and a promotion -she’s clearly fuming, probably after being lambasted by the higher echelons. She’s getting closer and you’re guessing it’s about that magic quadrant. Yup, the dot moved down a little bit. The analyst won’t explain, you’ve tried his boss, send some emails and it feels you’re out of options.

Time to play the trump card.

You stop the vituperating middle-manager in her track and announce that you’ll call the om-bud-s-man.

That of course never happened to me personally, probably because Gartner indeed has a full time –and more– staff to mitigate such conflicts and ensure high ethical standards. Some say the job is to defend the analyst, which personally I find demeaning towards fully grown-up analysts. The truth of the matter is that with smaller firms, when you’re stuck with a quadrant of some kind –Wave, Green, Marketscoape or else-, there’s little you can do after you’ve brought the matter to the analyst’s boss’ boss.

That’s why I’m looking forward to co-host, together with Peggy O’Neill (LinkedIn, @pegoneil) the author of an IIAR Best Practice Paper on escalating research disagreements, Nancy Erskine (LinkedIn, @NErskine, official bio) on the 9/7/13 at 1600 BST (translation here if you like your month before and your time not the Queen’s).

During this call, we’ll cover the role of the ombudsman, how to engage, best AR practices. Please send me questions before (lleforestier.at/analyst relations:dot;org, @lludovic or @bearingpointar), during the TC or directly on the phone during the webinar.

For more information on the Gartner Ombudsman, I advise you to read this Gartner page and Peggy’s paper (link, IIAR membership required) as well as this Quora entry before the call. Not to forget my previous post: Kudos to the Gartner Ombudsman for asking tough questions.

Registration: This session is free for IIAR members, guests can join for $25 / £15 each. Please register using this link or email info.at/analystrelations:org. You can join the IIAR here.

The AR Compass is a framework to uncover business goals and align your AR programme to those goals.

This will be an invaluable call to anyone in the AR business and give you real ammunition for insisting your executives spend more time preparing analyst presentations. This is a unique opportunity to glean top tips from some of the biggest names in the business and we hope as many of you as possible will join us.
