Analyst moves: Merv Goes to Gartner!

In what is probably going to be one of the most commented moves in the industry, Merv Adrian (blog, LinkedIn, @merv) is going back to a large analyst firm, the largest actually. Indeed, after leaving Forrester to create IT Market Strategy, a boutique firm selling advisory services mainly to IT vendors, Merv announced he was joining Gatner as VP of Research –apparently in the RAS team along Don Feinberg and Mark Beyer.

Should the analysts be blogging?

Where I’d like to leave you for now (and that’s a great start for the comment thread) is that it seems that at the large firms have lost some of thinking agility while growing up but they are still the influence kings when it comes to influencing deals.
On the other side, there are lots of very talented thinkers in the ecosystem but precisely because they are a lot, they don’t have the same brand and influence.

Analyst ethics?

I strongly believe that any time a vendor gives money to an analyst firm for paid-for work it needs to be referenced and authentic. Our industry needs firms it can trust to help them make informed decisions – without them, and if it’s reputation is tarnished by the acts of a few who practice methods I don’t agree with then the whole market fails.
