AuctionSuccessfully negotiating your contract with analyst firms and gaining best advantage from your contract is a key activity for all Analyst Relations teams. This second meeting of a IIAR Discussion Group will review the outcomes document from the first meeting (available <<Here>>) and continue the conversation. As Gartner is the largest of the analyst firms we expect the discussion will no doubt focus here; this will not be to the exclusion of all (or any) of the other analyst companies.
Held under Chatham House Rules the discussion will be chaired by Aniruddho Mukherjee (Head of AR and Branding Manager, Europe for HCL Technologies). The aim is to (ultimately) produce an IIAR Best Practice Paper that combines the knowledge of all participants.
Of course, by attending you will not only have the opportunity to give your knowledge and opinions but also gain from that of others and have the advantage to submit questions directly. Lets have a lively discussion, the more of you that join in the better, so please don’t forget to REGISTER <<HERE>>. Attending IIAR Events is free for all members, there may be a small charge for non-members.

Wrap-up: Netscout vs. Gartner re. Magic Quadrant positioning

gartner[1]Two Three interesting takes on Netscout suing Gartner for not putting them in the leaders quadrant:

16/9/16 update:

See also this 2009 post by Jonny Bentwood: Is shooting on the referee productive?

Bottom line:

  • The Gartner methodology is quite solid nowadays, however the firm is still expressing an opinion by the choices it makes on inclusion criteria and weightings for instance.

[GUEST POST] Gartner Updates: Notes from the AR regional briefing in the UK

By Henrietta Lacey-Gutsell / CGI (@henriettalacey, LinkedIn)

Gartner has its ‘listening hat’ on at the UK AR Regional BriefingNew methodologies introduced by Gartner

Gartner recently opened its doors to AR professionals with a day of presentations and interactive workshops targeted at the influencer relations community. The idea was to build on the AR forums given at the Gartner Symposium conferences and spend more time on topics that we, as AR professionals, have said we wanted to know more about.

Overall, it was an excellent event with a good balance of presentations and interactive discussions. The first panel slot was rather over staged and an over-run at the start of the day left little time for what must have been one of the most useful sessions of the day by David Black on Gartner reports and methodologies (“Gartner Update: Magic Quadrant Contextualization and Critical Capabilities”). See below for a summary of the updates. Continue Reading →

The IIAR opens its German Chapter

As an analyst relations manager you may ask yourself the question: Should I do any specific German AR? Should I run an activity at CeBIT in Hanover, or at the Supercomputing show in Leipzig or set up exclusive f2f meetings with analysts at some location like Munich or Frankfurt, and maybe do it in local language? Should I send my stakeholders to a local analyst event like the Gartner CIO summit in Berlin?

How does the German analyst landscape look like. Which industry and analyst events are relevant? How big is the German analyst firms’ influence? Continue Reading →

[GUEST POST] 451 hires ex Ovum, Gartner chief to lead global research

It was good to hear from Brett Azuma last week. He got in touch to let me know he’s just been appointed to lead the 60-strong analyst team at 451 Research.

If you don’t know him already, Brett’s an experienced and well-respected leader.  He’s previously held senior positions at Ovum, where he was managing director, and Gartner, where he was group vice president/chief analyst. Continue Reading →

Examining The New Gartner Interactive Magic Quadrant

Gartner has recently announced that an enhanced version of the Magic Quadrant will be released  on 29 July. So what’s driving this change, what is it, and what does it mean to you as an AR professional?

Here comes MQ 2.0
The Gartner MQ has not really changed its physical appearance since its original introduction. The famous two-by-two matrix and dots started life on paper and were effectively shifted onto the web with no real change. Over the years, the MQ has been industrialized at the back end with a structured measurement methodology. The front end moved from a static, locked-in-PDF view to a mildly interactive view several years ago, where users could mouse-over a position to read vendor specific strengths and challenges. The degree of interactivity however is about to increase dramatically.

So what’s driving this minor revolution? Continue Reading →

IIAR Webinar with Gartner’s Nancy ‘Ombudsman’ Erskine

It’s Friday night and your exec / stakeholder / boss (tick all that applies) walks into your cubicle / desk / office brandishing what clearly is a Gartner report in his hand. Alas, it’s clear it does not mean kudos and a promotion -she’s clearly fuming, probably after being lambasted by the higher echelons. She’s getting closer and you’re guessing it’s about that magic quadrant. Yup, the dot moved down a little bit. The analyst won’t explain, you’ve tried his boss, send some emails and it feels you’re out of options.

Time to play the trump card. Continue Reading →

[GUEST POST] Crunching the analyst firm numbers – what do they tell us about Gartner, Forrester, IDC & others?

This post was originally posted by Dave Noble / IntelligenAR (LinkedIn@IntelligenAR) on his blog.

aji nagabon

Not all IT research is about numbers, but the IT analyst business definitely is. It’s a business after all, and if you don’t make the numbers, you don’t have a business. But what’s interesting is how many different ways there are to make the numbers stack up.

It’s somewhat ironic that while IT analyst firms often rely on public – and private – disclosure of information from both vendors and end-user organisations to make their prognostications, they often don’t like to reveal too much about their own businesses. The big public firms, Gartner & Forrester, disclose good detail about their revenues to meet their statutory requirements, and perhaps a little more, while the private firms tend to be fairly vague. Gartner’s latest April Fool’s prank- the Hype Bicycle!

Gartner has done it again!! On 1st April 2013, Gartner “introduced” the Hype Bicycletm  that it claims is specially designed to help navigate the peaks and troughs that IT managers encounter every day, and is your vehicle for IT success. According to Gartner, “After last year’s Magic Fractals and the year before’s Real Quadrants, this new addition to Gartner’s branded research should attract a good deal of attention.”

[GUEST POST] The Final Countdown… or how to survive attending MWC 2013

Susannah Archibald / IIAR

It’s that time of year again. When all thoughts turn to the biggest global mobile technology and applications showcase in the world, Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress (MWC). Held each year by the GSMA, the show unveils some key yearly indicators that any attending exhibitor, press member, or aspiring Steve Jobs-acolyte should know about mobile.

According to a recent IIAR webcast I listened into with industry analysts Keith Humphreys of euroLAN and Catherine Haslam of Ovum, as well as members of the IIAR membership committee, estimates say that you’ll be one of nearly 1,500 exhibitors, and more than 67,000 attending members of the public. And if MWC 2012 estimates from the GSMA hold up this year, there could be many more who are interested in demonstrating or learning about your mobile wares.

How can you possibly hope to get maximum value out of Analysts who are attending MWC 2013? Continue Reading →

IIAR London Forum on 7th March 2013 in London

The next IIAR London Forum will be held on March 7th at 1600 GMT in London (near Victoria)!

For this event we have two great topics on the agenda:

  1. Best Practice session on ‘Sponsoring and Exhibiting at Analyst Events’. Which events and sponsorship types work, what are some of the best practices to get the best value from your investment and which specific analyst events work (and which don’t). Led by a panel of expert AR professionals including Caroline Dennington (Symantec) and Julian Dobbins (Micro Focus).
  2. Analyst Roundtable on ‘Hot Buttons for Financial Services’. Where will the analysts be focusing their research in this sector in 2013 and how can you best position your company’s products and services as a result. Confirmed for this panel are Peter Redshaw (Gartner), Daniel Mayo (Ovum), Catherine Stagg-Macey (Celent), Alex Kwiatkowski (IDC Financial Insights) and Ralph Silva (SRN, HfS and often times the BBC) with Sally Yates (Metia) as chair.
