3rd German Chapter Stammtisch in Munich

It’s been a lively dMunich city center, Germanyiscussion. The third German chapter IIAR Stammtisch end of October, in Munich gathered AR professionals and analysts speaking about the strategic role that analyst relations play in companies of different sizes and countries.

In a group of 9 we kicked off the AR discussion with an intro round at 7pm and didn’t stop until we realised it has gotten late. As a topic we had chosen “how is AR for medium-sized companies different to AR for large companies” and while it is clear that smaller companies can learn from the big players, we raised the questions, whether there is anything to learn as well the other way around. “Why should I speak with him and her”

Yvonne Kaupp

Author – Yvonne Kaupp

Last week, the second German IIAR Stammtisch gathered AR professionals and analysts for a private dining event in central Munich, this led into an interesting and enjoyable discussion about AR measurement. The overarching question was how to best communicate internally the value analysts can bring to the business, and the value of well managed communications between vendors and analysts.

“Why should I speak to this analyst” is a question AR pros are often confronted with. The pressure on AR pros has risen during the past years in terms of showing the return of investments gained through analyst relations and showing the value analysts can bring. In recent years expectations have both grown and  changed. Analysts are well aware of the new challenges, and eager to learn how to address.

In past years reports, whitepapers and analyst advice were naturally part of the relationship, today budgets are tighter in many companies, and investments in analyst insights have shrunk. Or teams became smaller, and bandwidth more limited to support research projects. Even more important becomes the task to explain to the internal stakeholders the treasures analysts can open up for them, and the value they can bring to the business.

AR professionals can face very different challenges. For example, an AR manager working for a new company in a niche market and a strong growth rate may face different challenges to an AR manager working for a large and established player in a saturated market. At the IIAR Stammtisch we exchanged about the specific pain points each of these AR managers might experience and the differing ways forward.

AR professionals and analysts have a common interest – proof the value of their work. Whilst we can’t do without AR measurement this has to be a value discussion rather than a simply a counting exercise, like counting the number of reports, the number of tweets, of interactions and so forth. AR pros and analysts need to join forces and seek ways to provide value to both sides and proof of the value delivered. The German Stammtisch, as part of the IIAR, will explore quantitative value measurement of Company+AR+Analyst interactions for a future IIAR Best Practice Paper.

Look out for more updates on this topic. We welcome your thoughts and experiences, leave a comment below – how do you show value delivered ?

New! US-based IIAR Networking Events in November and December

Liberty SmallAnalyst Relations:  it can be rewarding, exhilarating, frustrating and – despite the fact that we’re often talking with analysts and spokespeople – it can be lonely, too.  Especially when you’re the only one at your company who does what you do . . . or even knows what you do!

As AR professionals, we are often a team of one, haven’t had much formal training, and are being asked to do more than ever before. It’s not easy.  But we’re not alone.  We are part of of a global community, one that is growing, evolving and learning to address new challenges every day.

For several years, IIAR members in the UK and Europe have taken advantage of IIAR Networking Cafe events to meet up, make new contacts, discuss common challenges and opportunities, mentor each other and strengthen the AR Community.

Now, we’re bringing the same opportunity to the the other side of the “pond”.

The IIAR is pleased to announce our first two local U.S. Networking Cafes, sponsored by the AR Forum. These informal evening events will offer U.S.-based AR professionals a chance for networking and exchanging ideas with peers.

These initial U.S. events will be opened to include to all AR professionals, and are not exclusive to members of IIAR.  Any AR professional based near — or traveling to — a host city on the scheduled dates is welcome to RSVP and attend.  Please, pass this information along!

What’s going on next week at Gartner Symposium?

After over 12 years in Cannes, the Gartner Symposium is moving to Barcelona. The events team told me that they were going to move it in 2012 anyway, but had to do it one year earlier because of the G20 (you know, that meeting that’s turned into a Greek tragedy). Anyhow, is there anyone here who remembers when it all started? I’ve been to about 12 and lost the count…

Here is a summary of activities for AR pros in general.

Monday 7th November 2011

  • 0930-1030 – Barcelona “Optimizing Relationships With Analyst Firms” Tutorial
Timor Meeting Room, Hilton Diagonal Mar Hotel This is a seminar organized by Gartner, see below for the description.

Tuesday 8th November 2011

  • 1530-1830 – Barcelona AR Forum and Cocktail Reception
Ballroom C, Hilton Diagonal Mar Hotel
Gene Hall, Peter Sondergaard, Jeff Golterman will as usual present a business and research update. Caroline Dennington (@CIARgirl) from Symantec and myself will be on a panel. Do sent any questions you’d like to be asked to Gartner my way (DM @iiar or email lleforestier a.t analstrelationsdotorg)
  • 2030- IIAR Café
This is the usual social for IIAR Members, the details are on Huddle. Except since many need their beauty sleep, we’re doing dinner rather than breakfast. Continue Reading →
