Gartner Symposium / ITxpo 2018: key takeaways for AR professionals

Gartner Symposium Barcelona 2018 - keynoteThis year’s keynote theme: the Continuous Next Strategy

Gartner Symposium, Gartner’s flagship event in Europe, attracted more than 8,000 visitors this year, and met or exceeded expectations, at least mine. The analysts were brilliant, inspiring speakers on stage and great advisors in the one2one meetings.

This was the first time in Europe that Mike Harris delivered the keynote, having taken over from Peter Sondergaard in the summer. It was a hard act to follow: Many attendees knew Sondergaard as an exceptionally gifted and inspiring speaker. Harris was different, of course. His presentation was strong and dynamic – and he came across as being very present, open and humble.

Harris outlined Gartner’s “Continuous Next” concept, referring to how the pace of innovation is accelerating and disrupting business models, and outlining the need for organizations to adapt to be successful. CIOs must adopt the role of business innovator and enabler, he said, and must interact with C-suite leaders to secure the foundation of digital business. In the era of Continuous Next, the CIO assumes responsibility for digital products and therefore controls not only technology and operations, but should also drive cultural change for the benefit of digital or business transformation. CIOs must also consider digital ethics before adopting new technologies.

Harris also noted that traditional enterprise roles, including HR, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Legal, Supply Chain will change as they all become digital. Continue Reading →

German IIAR Summer Stammtisch 2017: scope of AR, ISG/Experton and Paulaner

One of the most picturesque beer gardens in Munich was the setting for this year’s IIAR German Chapter Summer Event, gathering AR professionals and industry analysts. Our topic of the night was what it takes to make an analyst relations (AR) program mature and strong.

As we discussed, what success looks like actually depends on your business objectives and expectations of the individual companies and stakeholders. We all recognised that “AR” has a very wide scope, since it also covers many complementary disciplines and – depending on your job – may include Market Intelligence, Go-to-Market, PR, Sales Enablement, Strategy, or all of these. Reporting lines also influence the weighting of AR components.  Continue Reading →

One of the biggest misconceptions about Analyst Relations is that you need megabucks or unlimited budgets in order to succeed. Of course, having the financial muscle to engage with analysts will ultimately get you further – and help drive deeper relationships with your Tier One analysts, but you can also do it on a budget. 3rd German Chapter Stammtisch in Munich

It’s been a lively dMunich city center, Germanyiscussion. The third German chapter IIAR Stammtisch end of October, in Munich gathered AR professionals and analysts speaking about the strategic role that analyst relations play in companies of different sizes and countries.

In a group of 9 we kicked off the AR discussion with an intro round at 7pm and didn’t stop until we realised it has gotten late. As a topic we had chosen “how is AR for medium-sized companies different to AR for large companies” and while it is clear that smaller companies can learn from the big players, we raised the questions, whether there is anything to learn as well the other way around. “Why should I speak with him and her”

Yvonne Kaupp

Author – Yvonne Kaupp

Last week, the second German IIAR Stammtisch gathered AR professionals and analysts for a private dining event in central Munich, this led into an interesting and enjoyable discussion about AR measurement. The overarching question was how to best communicate internally the value analysts can bring to the business, and the value of well managed communications between vendors and analysts.

“Why should I speak to this analyst” is a question AR pros are often confronted with. The pressure on AR pros has risen during the past years in terms of showing the return of investments gained through analyst relations and showing the value analysts can bring. In recent years expectations have both grown and  changed. Analysts are well aware of the new challenges, and eager to learn how to address.

In past years reports, whitepapers and analyst advice were naturally part of the relationship, today budgets are tighter in many companies, and investments in analyst insights have shrunk. Or teams became smaller, and bandwidth more limited to support research projects. Even more important becomes the task to explain to the internal stakeholders the treasures analysts can open up for them, and the value they can bring to the business. Continue Reading →

Should I run an activity at CeBIT in Hanover, or at the Supercomputing show in Leipzig or set up exclusive f2f meetings with analysts at some location like Munich or Frankfurt, and maybe do it in local language? Should I send my stakeholders to a local analyst event like the Gartner CIO summit in Berlin?
