[Guest Post] IIAR UK Forum – Sales and Social Media Debated

I was delighted to host the IIAR (Institute of Industry Analyst Relations) forum yesterday in a very sunny and hot London.

It is always great to see how many AR professionals are willing to come along and meet old friends, make new contacts, learn about best practice and share their own experiences.

Fionnula Fitzsimons gave an absolutely excellent presentation on AR and sales. It was interesting, insightful and practical. Anyone in AR who needs to get their sales teams on board and demonstrate the value that AR can add to the sales cycle should make sure they get a copy of her presentation (downloadable by IIAR members from Huddle).

And then, we had an excellent panel debate on how analysts use social media with Richard Edwards (Ovum), Dale Vile (Freeform Dynamics) and Dean Bubley (Disruptive Analysis). Robert De Souza of IPsoft chaired a lively discussion. (more…)

Analyst Relations (AR) is a highly specialized marketing discipline whose purpose is to facilitate a two-way information exchange between vendors and industry analysts, such as Gartner, Forrester and AMR.  Outbound communications from the firm to the analysts are designed to gain mind share and favorably position the firm’s services against competitors.  By influencing analyst opinions of these services, DTT will have an advantage in securing leads and referrals from analysts and in rating favorably in analyst reports.  Inbound communications to the firm from analysts serve as a conduit for information about competitors, market trends, new technologies and market opinions on DTT.  Analyst communications also can serve as a source of advice in shaping and directing marketing messages or firm strategies.

The IIAR USA will be holding its next virtual Forum with Jeff Golterman, GVP, Product Management, Gartner on Thursday 22nd September, 8am PT / 11am ET / 4pm BST. This is your opportunity to offer constructive feedback for changes to Gartner practices that impact AR – so bring your best ideas.   In particular Jeff is looking for ideas on how to make the AR process more efficient in terms of working with Gartner.  We have arranged for a time so that European IIAR members can also participate.

How I took the IIAR certification test…and lived to tell the tale

I have to start this post with a confession. I’ve been on the IIAR Board for nearly 10 months and only recently got around to taking the IIAR Certified Professional exam. Shame on me. But like a lot of other IIAR members I suspect, I was put  off by misconceptions about the test. So having gone through the process and come out the other side relatively unscathed and with a shiny new certificate to put on my wall, I thought it might be helpful to share my experiences and hopefully dispel some of the myths. And if I can encourage more members to take the certification test, even better. (more…)
