[Guest Post] IIAR UK Forum – Sales and Social Media Debated

Contributor: David Rossiter, Head of Sunesis Analyst Relations and Director, Harvard PR

I was delighted to host the IIAR (Institute of Industry Analyst Relations) forum yesterday in a very sunny and hot London.

It is always great to see how many AR professionals are willing to come along and meet old friends, make new contacts, learn about best practice and share their own experiences.

Fionnula Fitzsimons gave an absolutely excellent presentation on AR and sales. It was interesting, insightful and practical. Anyone in AR who needs to get their sales teams on board and demonstrate the value that AR can add to the sales cycle should make sure they get a copy of her presentation (downloadable by IIAR members from Huddle).

And then, we had an excellent panel debate on how analysts use social media with Richard Edwards (Ovum), Dale Vile (Freeform Dynamics) and Dean Bubley (Disruptive Analysis). Robert De Souza of IPsoft chaired a lively discussion. Continue Reading →

[Job Posting] Deloitte Seeks AR Manager – Boston, USA

Analyst Relations (AR) is a highly specialized marketing discipline whose purpose is to facilitate a two-way information exchange between vendors and industry analysts, such as Gartner, Forrester and AMR.  Outbound communications from the firm to the analysts are designed to gain mind share and favorably position the firm’s services against competitors.  By influencing analyst opinions of these services, DTT will have an advantage in securing leads and referrals from analysts and in rating favorably in analyst reports.  Inbound communications to the firm from analysts serve as a conduit for information about competitors, market trends, new technologies and market opinions on DTT.  Analyst communications also can serve as a source of advice in shaping and directing marketing messages or firm strategies.

How I took the IIAR certification test…and lived to tell the tale

I have to start this post with a confession. I’ve been on the IIAR Board for nearly 10 months and only recently got around to taking the IIAR Certified Professional exam. Shame on me. But like a lot of other IIAR members I suspect, I was put  off by misconceptions about the test. So having gone through the process and come out the other side relatively unscathed and with a shiny new certificate to put on my wall, I thought it might be helpful to share my experiences and hopefully dispel some of the myths. And if I can encourage more members to take the certification test, even better. Continue Reading →

IIAR ANALYST OF THE YEAR – Voting open!

The 2011 survey to find the IIAR Analyst of the Year is now open.

Our search for the industry’s top-rated analyst and analyst firm has begun. This year, to reflect the changing analyst landscape, we have introduced a new category – ‘Best New Analyst Firm’. This is for a firm that has been set up in the last 12 months, which was not trading under the same name prior. It can be a firm created as a spin-off of an established firm but can’t be a simple re-branding or switch of coverage.

Following member feedback, we have also added account management into the considerations of deciding on top analyst firm.

Make sure your nominated analyst and analyst firm get the recognition they deserve…

VOTE NOW

This survey is open to members and non-members and all votes are strictly confidential.

The survey will be closed on Friday 30th September with the results announced late October.

Our huge thanks to Jonny Bentwood for his help and support with this survey.

Why do you need AR when you have PR?

I’m often asked why bother with AR when there’s already a fully-fledged PR team? To many analysts and AR pros, this may sound like a strange question, after all do you ask an electrician to do the plumbing?

However, I’ve seen many times in large corporations PR folks coming to manage AR teams (not always successfully I must say) and in small companies marketing types having to do AR on top of the rest (sometimes very successfully if not consistently).

Many AR pros, when asked will tell you analysts hate being dealt with by PR people. Analysts in fact hate being treated like journalists: sent a lot of content, not deep enough and expected to produce coverage. Continue Reading →
